Short description

Werend Boesmans (°1982) obtained his PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Leuven (Belgium) in 2010. Supported by fellowships from the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) he worked as a postdoc in the lab of Prof. Vassilis Pachnis at the National Institute for Medical Research and The Francis Crick Institute (London, UK) and in the Laboratory for Enteric Neuroscience (TARGID) led by Prof. Pieter Vanden Berghe at the University of Leuven. In 2018 he was appointed as tenure track Assistant Professor at Maastricht University and the University of Hasselt (Belgium). His group investigates the patterning, communication and function of the enteric nervous system, and explores the contribution of faulty intestinal nerve circuits and the gut microbiome in both digestive and brain disorders. His work is funded by FWO, BOF-tUL and NWO-ZonMW (VIDI 2019).
