Short description

Lisa Hillen has been working as a pathologist at MUMC+ since March 2016. Her main areas of interest are pulmonary pathology, dermatopathology, and head neck pathology. Furthermore, she supports the uropathology team and participates in nephropathology diagnostics. She participates in multiple MDOs, including oncologic pulmonary pathology, interstitial lung pathology, and nephropathology. She also participates in the supervision of pathology residents and teaches medical students.

Lisa Hillen (1984, Aachen) studied medicine from 2004-2010 at the Rheinisch Westfälische Universität (RWTH) in Aachen, Germany. In the final year of her studies, she worked at the Universitätsklinik Balgrist, Zurich, Switzerland and at the center hospitalier universitaire St. Eloi, Montpellier, France.

From 2011-2016, she was trained as a pathologist at successively the pathology department of the MUMC+, the Viecuri Medical Center in Venlo and the Atrium Medical Center in Heerlen. The last six months of her training she worked as research fellow in hematopathology and nephropathology at the Department of Pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. Dr. R.P. Hasserjian, Prof. J.A. Ferry and Prof. R.B. Colvin were her supervisors. She has been working as a staff member at MUMC+ since 2016.

Dr. med. research (Dr. med., RWTH Aachen, Germany)
Tijdens haar opleiding geneeskunde startte zij in 2007 met haar promotieonderzoek “Characterisation of Fetal Human Neural Progenitor Derived Astrocytes and Effects of Trophic Factors and ECM on CNS in Vitro Neurite Regeneration” (Instituut voor Neuropathologie, RWTH Aken). Zij rondde dit promotieonderzoek af in 2011.

PhD research (Ph.D., GROW School MUMC+, Maastricht University)
Naast de patiëntenzorg volgde Lisa Hillen haar Ph.D. promotietraject over translationeel dermatopathologisch onderzoek op het gebied van Spitzoïde melanocytaire tumoren. Zij rondde dit promotieonderzoek af in 2022.

Since March 2016, she is a registered pathologist and started as a staff member of pathology at MUMC+.

Other achievements

Research Focus
Besides patient care, Lisa Hillen is involved in translational dermatopathological research in metastatic melanomas. She also participates in lung oncology research in the context of neuroendocrine pulmonary neoplasms.

In 2021, Dr. L. Hillen together with Dr. V. Winnepenninckx won an Academic Alliance Fund from MUMC+ and Radboud umc with their project: Mohs surgery supported by artificial intelligence: better, sneller en goedkoper.
