Bela joined MUMC as an associate professor of "Forensic pathology" in 2015. Her areas of interest further include forensic and clinical neuropathology, clinical autopsy pathology, cardiovascular pathology and postmortem imaging. She participates in the training of residents and medical students in the field of forensic and clinical autopsy pathology.

Bela Kubat studied medicine at the Catholic University of Nijmegen (1976-1983). After medical school she gained clinical experience during her residency at the department of neurology and specialized in 'Neuropathology' at the University of Essen (BRD). Afterwards she obtained the specialization 'Clinical Pathology' at the MUMC and in 2003 started working at the Dutch Forensic Institute in The Hague, where she is partly employed to date.

PhD research
Bela Kubat received her PhD from MUMC+ in 1993 with the thesis: "Hemorrhagic Brain Infarction".

Work experience

Special national and international deployments:

  • February - March 2005 participation in the RIT deployment in Thailand (identification Tsunami victims)
  • May 2008 participation in the deployment of the Dutch team in Georgia (identification victim of Schiphol fire)
  • July 2009 leader of the team during the deployment to Djibouti (PA investigation of a victim of the hijacking of the ship "The Marathon")
  • August 2014 participation in organizing and conducting forensic investigation in Hilversum into the crash of flight MH17 in Ukraine
  • May/June 2022 participation in the onsite investigation of war crimes of the International Criminal Court and the Government of the Netherlands in Ukraine

Other achievements

  • As of September 2015, Prof. Kubat is involved in the evaluation, development and implementation of postmortem imaging as a quality tool in the context of patient care.
  • Member of the Editorial Board for the Special Issue of FSI of the EAFS 2015, 2018 and 2022
  • Organizer of the Intensive Forensic Neuro-Pathology Training (IFNPT).
  • Chair of the NVVP continuing education committee.
