Short description

Carmen Severens-Rijvers has been working as a pathologist in the department of pathology at MUMC+ since 2017. Her primary areas of interest are perinatal pathology, pediatric pathology, gynecopathology, mammopathology and cytology. In 2018, she received her PhD with her research on placental syndrome and the villous vascularization of the placenta in this pathology. She has a great affinity for conducting scientific research, which she therefore continues after her PhD, particularly within perinatal and pediatric pathology. She also participates in various multidisciplinary meetings, supervises residents and teaches medical students. She is also involved in general departmental matters, such as optimizing quality.

Education and work experience
Carmen Severens-Rijvers studied medicine at Maastricht University from 2002 to 2008. Following this, she worked as a researcher at Maastricht University in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. After this, she trained as a pathologist at MUMC+ from 2012 to 2017. In the final year of her training, she further specialized in perinatal and pediatric pathology during an in-depth internship at UMCU. Since completing her pathology training, she has been working as a staff member in the pathology department at MUMC+. 

In addition, she started training with the International Pediatric Pathology Association in 2019.

PhD research
On November 23, 2018, Carmen Severens-Rijvers received her PhD from Maastricht University on her thesis "Placental syndrome: early pregnancy adaptation and placental development," in a collaboration between the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Pathology at MUMC+. She investigated possible angiogenic biomarkers in the prediction of placental syndrome in the first half of pregnancy and studied placental vascularization after pregnancy.

Work experience

She worked from 2008 to 2011 as a physician researcher at the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at MUMC+.
From 2011 to 2012 she worked as ANIOS insurance physician at UWV in Heerlen.

Carmen Severens-Rijvers is particularly active in scientific research within perinatal and pediatric pathology, especially the placenta.
She follows national and international conferences and symposiums with interest.
