Short description

Iryna Samarska has been working as a pathologist in the Department of Pathology at MUMC+ since January 2019. Her main areas of interest are genitourinary pathology, liver pathology, pancreatic-biliary pathology and gastrointestinal pathology. She participates in multidisciplinary cancer conferences, including oncologic gastrointestinal, liver, pancreaticobiliary, genitourinary and neuroendocrine tumors. She also participates in the supervision of pathology residents and teaches medical students.

In 2002, Iryna Samarska completed her training in Medicine at the National Medical University in Kyiv, Ukraine. In Kyiv, she also conducted her first Ph.D. on the pharmacological treatment of urge incontinence. After defending the thesis, she did her second Ph.D. at the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Groningen. The second Ph.D. project was on post-operative vascular reactivity and related renal disease. In 2012, she completed the assessment procedure of non-European medical doctors. During that period, she also worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Anesthesiology, University of Groningen.

In 2013, she started training as a pathology resident in the department of MUMC+. In 2015-2016 she also had an internship with Prof. Dr. De Bruїne, Dr. Van Marion and Dr. Wouda (Viecuri, Venlo). In 2018, she did a 1-year fellowship in urogenital pathology and a scientific internship with Prof. Dr. J. Epstein, in the pathology department, at John Hopkins University (Baltimore, USA). She attended daily peer review (surgical pathology) and peer review (gastrointestinal pathology) conferences.

Other achievements

In addition to patient care, Iryna Samarska is involved in urogenital research projects, hepatobiliary research and renal tumors research.

Iryna Samarska is a member of the expert group on urogenital pathology, the autopsy pathology work group of the Dutch Society for Pathology (NVVP) and the Dutch Liver Pathology panel.
