Sylvia Heeneman is a Professor of Medical Education at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML), School of Health Profession Education (SHE), Maastricht University, Maastricht, The Netherlands. She studied Health Sciences at Maastricht University (graduated 1991) and completed a PhD in Cardiovascular Research at the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht, Maastricht University (graduated 1997). From 1997 – 2017, her research activities in cardiovascular research were: mechanisms of atherosclerosis, and specifically radiation-induced atherosclerosis, and molecular imaging of atherosclerosis. She completed the Master Health Profession Education (MHPE) program in 2014 (with honours). Her current research interests in the health profession education field are (programmatic) assessment in undergraduate and post-graduate medical education, and mentoring. Within the FHML, she was the program coordinator of the Physician-Clinical Investigator program (2011-2017), a graduate-entry, competency-based program that trains students to become physicians and clinical investigators (4 year program). In this program, programmatic assessment was implemented in 2012 and was a stepping stone for implementation in other FHML programs (Bachelor and Master of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences). Currently she is the program coordinator of the Bachelor program of International Track of Medicine (2017 - ) and the chairman of the Board of Examiners of the Biomedical Sciences program (2017 - ).
